Safe Routes to School
Remember the days of walking and biking to school? Well, nowadays a trend has set it where kids are shuttled to and from school by car. This results in fewer kids walking or biking, more traffic around schools, and a whole host of related domino-effect issues (like, say, the childhood obesity epidemic).
Our hope is to engage awareness and discussion on this topic. Is it better to "protect" kids from something we've created, or work on solving the core issues with the good intention of raising healthy, happy children in an over-motorized society?
Let's start with identifying Safe Routes to School.
- Safe Routes to School - Where are the safe routes?
- Gather friends and parents to create a "Walking Schoolbus" - a concept being used all over the U.S., making it safe and fun for kids to walk with a group.
- Schools are eligible for our annual "Commuting Challenge" in May to get to and from school by walking or biking at least one time that week. Panera Bread gives free vouchers to all participants and Ozark Greenways gives out trophies and more free stuff! Register online through the starburst on the right side of this page, if you're not already registered.
- Feeling good about helping create a bike-friendly Springfield - the children will thank you!
